All about waterproof mascara

What is the difference between waterproof and washable mascara?

Waterproof mascara lasts a lot longer than the normal kind, especially when it rains or if the climate where you live is really humid. If you have a problem with your mascara smudging, you might wanna switch to a waterproof or water resistant one. Also, waterproof mascara holds the curl of your lashes a lot better, because of it's drier consistency. I prefer using it when I want my eyelashes to look really long and dramatic (I've got really straight lashes).

Does it look different on the lashes?

I don't know if everybody notices a difference between the two, but I do (on my lashes). The waterproof mascara makes them a lot harder and crunchier, that's why curling them after putting mascara on is not the best idea. It could easily break them.

Is it harder to remove?

Waterproof mascara is impossible to remove if you try to use your normal eye makeup remover. You will probably end up pulling a lot of eyelashes out, which nobody wants. I would recommend using some kind of an oil, which breaks down the mascara really easily if you rub it gently onto your eyes. Personally, I use baby oil, because it's affordable and it works very well. You can try castor oil (it makes the lashes grow), almond oil or some people use olive oil and vaseline, but they don't work for me. After the oil dissolves my makeup, I wipe everything away with some cleansing water on a cotton pad.

Pros:

  • Holds the curl all day
  • Doesn't smudge AT ALL!!!
  • Lasts a very long time
  • Gives a lot of volume because of the dry texture

Cons:

  • Hard to remove
  • Damages the lashes slightly, so I would recommend conditioning them with vaseline from time to time
  • Dries out pretty quickly, so it's necessary to replace every 2-3 months
  • Feels a little bit harder on the lashes

My thoughts on some waterproof mascaras

Essence Get big lashes waterproof mascara – I wanted to see if it could compare to my Voluminous mascara, plus it's cheaper. I don't like the brush of that mascara at all. The wand has a tapered shape, but it doesn't work like it's supposed to. It's too big and “hard”. Not a lot of product comes out, so it doesn't make the lashes nice and thick. It just coats them and makes them black, which is not what I'm looking for. I wouldn't mind it if it wasn't that hard to apply, but I see myself not reaching for it, because I know I will end up with mascara on my eyelid.

Max Factor 2000 calorie waterproof volume mascara – That's what I'm using at the moment, I wear it every single day. I really like this mascara. It gives length and a little bit of volume, so it's great for casual wear. I like more dramatic lashes, but I still use it and enjoy it. If you're looking for a nice basic mascara for every day, I highly recommend this. It's very inexpensive, too. Great for the lower lashes, because of the small brush.

L'Oréal Voluminous waterproof mascara is my favourite of all time!!! I absolutely love it and have already repurchased it about 3 times. It creates volume like no other, I love the brush, because it's not very big and it's not one of those plastic ones. For some reason the formula is really wet at first, but after a week or so, it gets better. I like dry mascaras, that's just my preference.
